Paraoptometric Certification: What You Need to Know
The Commission on Paraoptometric Certification (CPC), in partnership with Professional Testing Corporation (PTC), administers all levels of certified paraoptometric exams. These exams ensure that individuals have the necessary knowledge and skills to perform as certified paraoptometrics at entry, intermediate, and advanced levels, as well as in paraoptometric coding. Those who pass their exam will receive certification from the CPC.
How the Exams Are Developed
Each exam is carefully designed based on a job analysis, which identifies the key knowledge, skills, and abilities required in the field. Experienced professionals draft and review questions to ensure accuracy, clarity, and fairness. The CPC then finalizes each exam to ensure it meets certification standards and determines the passing score.
Levels of Certification
The American Optometric Association (AOA) offers four levels of Paraoptometric Certification:
- Certified Paraoptometric (CPO)
- Certified Paraoptometric Assistant (CPOA)
- Certified Paraoptometric Technician (CPOT)
- Certified Paraoptometric Coder (CPOC)
To earn certification, candidates must pass an exam created and administered by the CPC and PTCNY. Certification must be renewed every three years to stay current in the field. AOA membership is not required to obtain or maintain certification.
Why Certification Matters
Paraoptometric certification is developed by optometry professionals and encourages continuing education as the field evolves. The CPO, CPOA, and CPOT exams are accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA), ensuring the highest standards. Additionally, the CPC is a proud member of the Institute for Credentialing Excellence, providing resources and support for certified professionals.
